Many groomers begin their careers by signing up for a pet grooming school.
When I first started my training back in the 1980s, I’d never even heard of a grooming school. I trained under an older groomer as an apprentice in a small grooming salon in my home state of Texas.
But now there are many different schools all over the world, and especially in the United States.
Some schools are run by one or two groomers out of a small grooming salon, where only a handful of students at a time will be trained, while other schools are huge facilities that can take in dozens of students at one time.
The most common schools are the training programs you can find in pet supply stores, such as PetSmart.
As these stores have grown, so has the number of locations, and now you can usually find one of these stores not far from every city or town.
So which school should you pick?
Even though I have never went to a grooming school as a student, I know many owners and have visited many schools.
I’ve been to all kinds of schools and in many cases I’ve helped develop some of the training sessions, using my own experience from instructing new groomers.
I’ve taught many people how to groom over the last 25 + years in my own salon. I usually agree to teach someone for a small fee, or sometimes I’ll teach someone if he or she agrees to work for me for at least two years after I train them.
In my opinion, smaller grooming schools are usually the best.
I recommend going to a school that has no more than 3 or 4 students at a time, because you can spend more time with your teacher when the class is smaller.
But you should never just sign up for a grooming school, no matter how big or small it is, without first doing your homework.
There are certain things you need to look for when you are exploring different grooming schools.
You also need to realize that just because a grooming school is close by doesn’t mean you should choose that particular school.
Sometimes people have to travel to train at a good school, and you might also have to do this.
But you also need to know that there are other training options...
Most importantly, you need to realize that you don’t always have to go to a grooming school to become a groomer, and there are other training options that might be better for you and your situation.
For example, one of the best ways to train is under an experienced groomer, like I did.
Some groomers even learn how to groom on their own, but I don’t recommend doing this.
