Groomers come from all sorts of different backgrounds, and many of them have worked in careers that are totally unrelated to pet care.
Over the years during my grooming career I’ve had the pleasure of meeting all kinds of people, and I’ve also spent a lot of time training others to become groomers and open their own business.
Many of the groomers I know used to be in totally different careers including:
Restaurant servers
Teachers
Auto mechanics
Veterinary technicians
Nursing
Banking
When I first started my grooming career I was working as a secretary for a car lot in Texas.
Like most groomers, I had always loved animals and I always wanted to work with them.
Back when I first started, there were basically only two ways to work with pets in my area:
Work for a veterinary office
Work for a pet boarding business
Most of the boarding was done at the veterinarian offices, and I didn’t have any training that would allow me to work for a vet.
So I decided to begin learning how to groom by working under an experienced groomer in my town.
For the past 25 + years I’ve owned my own small grooming business and make over $120,000 a year.
Did you know...?
Even if you don’t have any experience, you can become a groomer and have a prosperous career making really good money.
Many people that become groomers have never even owned a pet!
Most groomers have the following traits:
Obviously you need to have a love for animals, and I’m sure you already do or you wouldn’t be on my website right now.
Groomers are very compassionate towards both pets and their owners.
You have to love working with pets day in and day out.
If you don’t love your job as a groomer, you can burn out and lose your passion for the work.
Working as a groomer is not the same as just hanging out with pets all day, you have to actually love working with them.
You need to believe in yourself, and be the kind of person who can admit when you make mistakes and work on fixing them.
If you believe in yourself and your work, you can have a very rewarding career.
I believe that anyone can have a great career in grooming if they are willing to learn!
If you’re planning to run your own grooming business you also need to have a drive to succeed.
As a groomer you need to have a strong work ethic, especially if you’re planning to open your own grooming business.
Many groomers make the big mistake of thinking they can open a business just because they know how to groom.
Running a grooming business can be easy once the business is set up, but many groomers don’t know how to get through the first steps.
And the first steps are the most important in making sure your business is set up the right way so that it will always be a solid money-maker.
Did you know...?
Groomers who own their own grooming business can sometimes make even more than a veterinarian?
Even a small grooming business can bring in $100,000 - $150,000 a year.
