How much does it cost to open a grooming business?

This is a common question, but it’s really hard to answer because not every location will cost the same amount of money.

For example, in some areas commercial locations can cost only a few hundred dollars to rent each month, but in other areas the same kind of location can cost a few thousand.

How much you need to get started will also depend on what kind of work you have to do to the property before you can begin.
Did you know...?

A grooming business is one of the least expensive businesses you can open, especially when compared to most other types of businesses.

There are several reasons most grooming businesses don’t need a lot of money to start.

One reason a grooming business can be so cheap is because you probably won’t need to hire any employees when you’re first starting.

Most groomers start out doing all of the work themselves, such as bathing and drying the pets, clipping the nails, and performing the actual groom.

Once the business starts to pick up regular customers, the groomer will then usually hire a bather.

As the business continues to grow, the groomer will hire more bathers, and then start to hire other groomers.

Some groomers work by themselves their entire career, especially groomers who work out of their homes.

You also don’t have to spend much money on supplies.

When you first start a grooming business, you don’t need to buy the most expensive equipment or supplies.

The main things you will need include:
  • At least one tub for bathing

  • Shampoos/conditioners

  • A force dryer

  • Grooming table

  • Grooming tools (combs, shears, clippers, blades, etc.)

  • At least a few kennels

Sometimes new business owners make the mistake of overspending when they first open, and this can be a costly mistake.

It really doesn’t take too much to give a dog a bath and cut her hair. Don’t go crazy when buying your first set of supplies and tools, and you won’t have to spend much money.

As your business grows, you can add more tools, supplies, and equipment as needed.

If you keep it simple in the beginning, you can buy everything you need for well under $500.

I opened my first grooming business for only around $1,500, and I now make over $100,000 each year.

What about mobile grooming?

One exception can be opening a mobile grooming business.

A mobile grooming business can be more expensive to start because you will need a mobile grooming van, and these vans can be expensive.

However, I’ve seen some vans sell for as little as $8,000 but you need to know what to look for so that you don’t buy a lemon that’s going to give you a lot of problems.

You can’t take care of your customers if you’re always having to repair and take care of your grooming van.
Did you know...?

If you’re going to open a salon in a fixed location, sometimes you can get started for as little as $3,000 - $5,000 or less.

If you want to open a mobile grooming business, you will need more money, depending on how much you spend on your van.
